WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT?

The Kefir Company uses coconut water with live cultures instead of sugary water or dairy for fermentation. We wanted to offer an alternative for people avoiding irritating milk proteins, like casein. The liquid of the young coconut also has an abundance of minerals and its natural sugars make it the perfect medium for the growth of beneficial microflora. The kefir eats the sugar in the coconut water to create a effervescent and tangy drink.

We think less is more so we use a small number of carefully selected ingredients in our drinks. There are no fillers, preservatives or nasties in our kefir, plus there’s no added sugar or water, and it’s caffeine-free. It’s pure, simple and nourishing. Our drinks are alive and are never pasteurised (a process of sterilisation which can destroy the natural probiotics) because we want you to enjoy all the benefits possible.

WHAT IS THE GUT AND WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

When you’re born a vast population of bacteria create their home on your skin, inside your gut, and in your nose and mouth. The gut (gastrointestinal tract) is a tube which begins at the mouth and runs to your derriere. The gut microbiome is a mini-ecosystem made up of trillions of microorganisms, mainly comprising of bacteria, and their genetic material which live in your intestinal tract. The gut bugs are fundamental to your health and well-being.

If your gut bacteria are fed well they’ll co-operate and help things run smoothly. Issues arise when you feed the troublemakers, who’ll take any opportunity they can get to proliferate and turn a healthy gut into a colony of unfriendly bacteria. Stress, processed food, excess sugar, antibiotics and today’s overly sterilised environments are feeding these unfriendly bacteria and are wreaking havoc on our microbiome.

“Issues with gut health and associated diseases are on the rise and more and more research points to the lack of microbial harmony in our modern-day diets and lifestyles as being the issue,” Carla Oates wrote in her book, ‘The Gut Guide’.

“When there is an imbalance in the bacteria in your gut, you may experience fatigue, allergies, mental health disorders, bloating and skin and autoimmune conditions. In contrast, when your gut lining is strong and there’s a good balance of bacteria in your gut you can experience good health, vitality and glowing skin.”

WHERE SHOULD I STORE MY KEFIR WHEN I TAKE IT HOME?

We recommend you keep your kefir refrigerated after you purchase it. This is because our cultures are living and it slows down the fermentation process. The bacteria are quite hardy so should not be adversely affected if kept unrefrigerated for short periods.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO TAKE KEFIR?

Kefir can be taken on an empty stomach or with food. It can be taken straight, or mixed into a smoothie for breakfast or a mid-morning/afternoon snack.

WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED SERVING SIZE?

Our 500ml bottle will contain approximately 10-16 days supply so that will cost you less than $2 per day.

Adults with a typical gut should start on 30ml a day, with women increasing slowly to 60ml and men to 80ml. You can add a tablespoon each week until you reach your recommended serving size. If you have issues when you increase the amount of kefir you are consuming go back to your previous serving. It takes time for your body to repair and it’s not a race. Children, aged 3 months plus, can start on 1.25ml.

DOES KEFIR REPLACE A PROBIOTIC?

Our coconut water kefir contains probiotics (the good bacteria) and prebiotics (food for the good bacteria). So for some people, Kefir may be enough to keep their gut on track. Others, however, who have specific digestive issues may need concentrated forms of probiotics or other strains. Kefir is excellent to use alongside a course of specific probiotic strains.

Our kefir is fermented coconut water. Fermented foods are foods that have been through a process of fermentation in which natural bacteria feed on the sugar in the food, creating lactic acid.
